For those of you who are new to IAPD, we welcome you to our site and encourage you to contact us for more detailed information. IAPD offers a wide range of courses and custom delivery options that can be tailored to suit any organization's specific driving needs.

2010 brought many changes and updates to our curriculum to reflect new technology and the changing automotive industry, while keeping up to date with the latest safety regulations. The training materials have been redesigned with a modular concept, thus allowing individual instructors greater flexibility to focus on a client's specific needs. As IAPD rolls out our new corporate identity and structure in 2011, we remain committed to our focus on continued modifications and improvements to our programs.

In the Beginning

In 1976, veteran race car driver Richard "Dick" Turner was approached by a police department and asked if he could devise a method which would teach safe, high speed driving techniques, without destroying vehicles and risking injury in the training process. Using his extensive background in professional and competitive driving, he developed a unique method that utilized low speeds but applied a high level of stress. He called this the low-speed, high-stress method.

His unique method was so successful with the police force that he expanded his program to employ the same principles in all types of professional driving and all types of vehicles, including emergency rescue and fire fighting apparatus. Dick Turner and his ground breaking teaching philosophy gained national attention when CBS's acclaimed news program, 60 Minutes, produced a segment "Hot Pursuit" which featured Richard and his unique method of training.

The Need for Training

Since the first vehicles were invented a need emerged for driver training. Laws were established so that drivers could safely navigate our roadways and a system of licensing ensured that drivers had the basic skills required to operate their vehicles. However, while licensing ensures a basic knowledge of the rules of the road and the skills required to legally operate a vehicle, once licensed, driver improvement is not required.

Driver improvement programs and advanced driver education gives organizations the ability to enhance their employees' driving skills, thereby reducing the cost and human safety concerns associated with collisions. Like all equipment, the operator performs best with a positive mental attitude, advanced techniques, and the confidence that comes from the specific knowledge of the vehicle he or she is operating.

The cost and the risk associated with operating a motor vehicle is significant. We at IAPD think that our commitment to training should reflect that responsibility.
